The new system is the latest and last of three ‘Systems’ which use ships pulling giant nets to remove items from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP). The Ocean Cleanup deployed System 03 in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch for the first time in late summer 2023.

Nearly three times larger than their previous technology and capable of cleaning the area of a football field every five seconds, the arrival of System 03 marks a huge leap forward in their mission to rid the oceans of plastic. The GPGP covers a massive area – three times the size of France, or twice the size of Texas – and cleaning the whole thing requires a fleet of systems.

By increasing the size of their systems Ocean Cleanup hope to make cleaning the ocean more economical. They have already removed hundreds of thousands of tones of plastic and aim to scale up to have a fleet of similar systems.

System 03 isn’t just ‘the next version’ of the organization’s cleaning technology. It’s the culmination of years of design, testing, refinement, and operation in real-world conditions.

5 reasons Why this movement is important;

The clean up  of plastic waste and garbage will save the planet and planetary waters

The clean up will save aquatic life as plastics suffocate and intoxicate aquatic fauna as well as pollutes the habitat.

The clean up will enhance the quality of aquatic biodiversity and ecosystems

The clean up will improve the quality of good and services from environmental/ planetary waters for the benefit of humans
