As Liberia’s October 10, 2023 presidential elections draw near, the nation stands at a crucial juncture in its history. With the political landscape heating up and competition between major parties intensifying, international partners, including the United States government, are urging caution and peace in the face of growing tensions.

The United States’ Warning

The United States, a long-standing ally of Liberia, has raised a red flag, cautioning politicians against any actions that could incite violence. The Chairge’ d, Affaires at the U.S Embassy near Monrovia, Catherine Rodriguez, recently affirmed the U.S Embassy’s commitment to assisting Liberia in ensuring credible and peaceful elections. She issued a stern warning that anyone found responsible for undermining the democratic process through violence could face sanctions.

This warning comes in the wake of disturbing reports of political violence, especially among supporters of the major political contenders: the former ruling Unity Party (UP) and the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC). Injuries have been reported, and tensions are on the rise.

Urgent Need to Maintain Peace

Madam Rodriguez emphasized the significance of preserving Liberia’s fragile peace, especially in the absence of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL). With the world’s eyes focused on these elections, the U.S. and the international community are working closely with the National Elections Commission (NEC) to ensure full access for election observers and transparency in the vote tallying process.

She called upon the government to uphold the principles of fairness, freedom, and peace during and after the elections, holding accountable anyone who attempts to disrupt the process. This call for accountability aligns with previous U.S. sanctions on appointed and elected officials implicated in corruption scandals.

Mixed Reactions to Sanctions

The U.S.’s previous sanctions on government officials stirred mixed reactions within Liberia. Some accused opposition parties like the Unity Party (UP) and the Alternative National Congress (ANC) of conspiring with U.S. officials to undermine President George Weah’s administration. They alleged that these sanctions aimed to erode public trust in the government and hinder President Weah’s chances of securing a second term.

Claims of One-Round Victories

Since the commencement of campaign activities, both major parties have made audacious claims of securing victory in the first round of the presidential elections. However, this claim has drawn criticism from statesmen who argue that such rhetoric could undermine the nation’s peace.

Liberia’s electoral system requires a candidate to obtain 51 percent of the votes to win outright. Given the multitude of political parties participating in the election, the need for a runoff election remains a realistic possibility.

The Battle for the ‘Silent Majority’

Amidst the political fervor, the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP), led by the Alternative National Congress (ANC), are on a quest to secure the votes of the elusive “silent majority.” These independent voters, rarely seen in political attire or at rallies, are crucial to electoral success in Liberia.

The CPP, driven by presidential candidate Alexander B. Cummings, is emphasizing the importance of “quality versus quantity.” They assert that Cummings is the candidate best equipped to uplift Liberia from economic stagnation and address unresolved issues. Their campaign strategy includes house-to-house canvassing, connecting with families and young people on the streets.

As the countdown to October 10, 2023, continues, Liberia stands at a pivotal moment. The nation’s political future hangs in the balance, with international partners emphasizing the importance of peaceful and credible elections. Liberians are urged to exercise their democratic rights wisely and responsibly, ensuring that their voices shape a brighter future for their beloved nation. The journey to the polls is marked by uncertainty, but it is also illuminated by the hope that Liberia will emerge from this chapter stronger and more united than ever before.
