Lake Retba/ Pink Lake- Senegal

By Jemimah Chungu

The views of a pink lake are uncommon unless you step in, Dakar, Senegal

North-east of Dakar Senegal. Lake Retba or Pink Lake is found in the Senegalese waters separated from the Atlantic Ocean only by a narrow corridor of dunes.

This lake gives a beautiful aesthetic of natural pink water. The pink water is however caused by a red pigment producing algae called Dunaliella Salina algae. The red pigment secreted by the algae absorbs sunlight which gives them energy to create ATP.
