The elephant census in the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area -KAZA- slated for next month, is a step in the right direction. According to the Zambian government, the exercise will be conducted in Zambia, Angola, Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe through an aerial survey from August to October 2022 at a cost of over three million US dollars.

This is an important undertaking, since the KAZA region is home to more than half of the Savanna elephant population. The findings will shape the next set of actions related to elephant protection and preservation. Furthermore, countries involved will be better equiped to plan for future animal-man conflicts.

We are glad about this exercise, and we would be even happier if the same exercise was done on other species in other parts of our continent. Wildlife in general is important, and countries should always endeavors to protect it.
